Will you be settling into the San Pedro area and want to know what schools are available for your children?

The schools in San Pedro are mostly under the Los Angeles Unified School District, but there are also a handful of private schools. San Pedro is known for having excellent schools with many specialized magnet programs and amazing opportunities for Gifted and Talented students.  There are 8 preschools, 16 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 5 high schools.

The following is a guide highlighting just a few of San Pedro’s amazing schools.

Elementary Schools

Park Western Place Elementary School

Park Western has been awarded the California Department of Education’s State Title I Academic Achievement Award for the 2010-2011 school year and the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award in 2005.

The school performs well and has an API score of 947. About 700 students are enrolled at Park Western each year. Their great schools’ rating is a perfect 10. They are Title I Eligible. In addition, Harbor Magnet is part of the school and provides educational opportunities for GATE students.

Point Fermin Marine Science Magnet School

Point Fermin focuses on incorporating Marine Science into their curriculum. It is a Title I Eligible School. Their latest API score is 853. They have an average of 320 students yearly.

Seventh Street Elementary School

Seventh Street has an API score of 879. They enroll about 494 students yearly. The school has a Great Schools rating of 8. They are Title I Eligible and they provide a GATE program to eligible students.

South Shores Magnet Schools for the Visual and Performing Arts

South Shores has won several awards including the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award in 2010 and the Golden Bell Award.

The school’s most recent API score is 893. They educate about 500 students per year.  Great Schools gives them a Rating of 8. The Great Schools community gives them the highest rating at 5 stars. In addition to the California curriculum common to all schools in LAUSD, they integrate arts into most class activities. The students put on productions and art shows yearly as part of their educational experience.

Taper Avenue Elementary School

Taper has an API score of 876. The school registers about 651 students a year. Great Schools gives them a high rating of 9 out of 10. Taper provides an English Inclusion Program and a Gifted/High Achievers Program.

Middle Schools

Richard Henry Dana Middle School

Dana has 1748 students matriculate there yearly and holds an API score of 731.  The highlight of the school is their outstanding, award winning marching band program. They also have an honors program.

High Schools

Port of Los Angeles High School

POLAHS is an independent charter school with an API score of 840. It’s a small campus with around 703 students yearly.  The school has a score of 9 out of 10 on great schools with a community rating of 5 stars. POLAHS received the California Distinguished School Award in 2011. They are known for their excellent academic program.

San Pedro Senior High School

San Pedro High School serves about 3296 students a year. Because of the high number of students, the school recently split between two campuses. The John M. & Muriel Olguin Campus is a brand new facility opened in 2012. San Pedro High has a police academy magnet and a marine science magnet program. Their API score is currently 716.

    I have seen South Shores performances and love them! What a great school, I wish I could of gone there when I was a kid.
