Rancho Palos Verdes is one among the four cities in the Palos Verdes Peninsula, with a population of about 42,000 spread over an area of 13.5 square miles. It was first incorporated in 1973 after a long and hard drive by the residents.
This region was a rich farming area in the early 1900’s, and was procured by Frank A. Vanderlip in 1913. The real development of the city started after the Great Lakes Carbon Corporation purchased the whole area from the Vanderlip family for mining purposes. But the huge tract of undeveloped land was then developed as a city with the help of architects and engineers who created the master plan of the property.
Boundaries of Rancho Palos Verdes
This city is located predominantly on the southern part of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and is close to the other three cities of the Peninsula – Palos Verdes Estate, Rolling Hills, and Rolling Hills Estates. Other cities adjacent to or close by Rancho Palos Verdes are Torrance, Redondo Beach, and Hermosa Beach, among some others. The city lies on the shoreline of the Pacific Ocean and forms an affluent neighborhood in the Palos Verdes region.
The Unique Factor
The Wayfarers Chapel is a landmark in this city and was designed by the renowned Lloyd Wright. The Point Vicente Interpretive Center was started with the mission of presenting and interpreting the unique history and features of the Peninsula. This center is 900 sq meters and has a specific section for the gray whale. Also, the city has procured land to build a nature preserve, which will be the largest such preserve located between San Diego and Santa Barbara. Apart from these, the beautiful Pacific beaches and bays are a treat to explore and enjoy.

There are numerous things to do and enjoy in Rancho Palos Verdes. You can go out to the beach and enjoy a lazy afternoon, or you could explore nature around in this well-preserved and well-maintained area. There are many parks and open spaces to relax and enjoy the sunny weather. You can visit the spa at the Terranea Resort for a day of relaxation, or the South Coast Botanic Garden in the nearby Palos Verdes Estate to see the unique vegetation of this area.
There are ample shopping opportunities with commercial districts, shopping complexes, and malls located in various places in and around the city. The Admiral Risty is a pub of choice in this place and is frequented by most of the residents. You can also enjoy Japanese cuisine at the Asaka, or food and drinks at the Lobby Bar & Lounge in the Terranea Resort.
The surrounding areas offer many opportunities to enjoy the scenic beauty of this region. The Point Vicente Lighthouse in located nearby and is famous for its Lady of Light ghost that can still be spotted on foggy nights. Rancho Palos Verdes is a very serene and beautiful place to visit and presents a calm and safer place at the southern edges of California along the Pacific shoreline.
