Mishi’s Strudel Bakery Asks Sweet or Savory?

By Teresa Harnage Leave a Comment

Mishi's Strudel Bakery

Take a few steps outside of downtown San Pedro to try a tasty little slice of Hungarian cuisine. Mishi’s Strudel  Bakery serves amazing authentic, homemade Hungarian – Austrian dishes in a small cozy restaurant.

Quaint, Cozy and Relaxing

Walking into Mishi’s Strudel is like walking into a country home. Tables are topped with lace table cloths, a few couches and larger chairs adorn small coffee tables, and some antique furniture adds to the quaint atmosphere of the restaurant. Outside seating is available for those who prefer to dine in the warm California sunshine. It’s a family run business and service is always good with the owners taking an active role in managing their restaurant. They will enjoy making you feel at home with pleasant conversation and friendly smiles. The cozy ambiance is perfect for an intimate meal shared with family or friends. Take the time to relax and savor the seductive dishes served at Mishi’s Strudel.

 Sweet and Savory

The homemade strudel, known as rétes in Hungary, is a treat for the taste buds. Strudel has a delectable, flakey outer pastry and is filled with sweet or savory ingredients. My favorite is the warmed cherry cheese strudel filled with dark cherries and creamy vanilla cheese, wrapped within a crispy pastry, and topped with a sprinkling of powdered sugar. Add a cup of mocha to the order to have a perfect dessert or breakfast. Or you could get the Crepes! Try their enticing Chesnut Purée Crépe smothered in whip cream or the Chocolate Hazelnut Crépe for other sweet options.

If your palate would prefer something more savory then you should try the flavorful Spinach and Sour Cream (Spenótos) Crepe. They always manage to put just the right amount of spices in the food and the textures are fantastic. Or try one of their authentic traditional Hungarian Specialties. The Goulash Stew is great for a chilly evening and is served with warm French bread. For an appetizer they have a “Bureka” Strudel with feta cheese, cottage cheese and eggs. Add an Italian Soda with flavored Italian syrup of your choosing to make a completely satisfying meal.

If you have trouble making up your mind, like I do, bring some friends so you can share, then take a few of their frozen strudels home to enjoy later. Their take home strudels come in several sizes and you can special order for party and catering needs.

Do you prefer the sweet or the savory? Not sure? Try out Mishi’s Strudel and let us know what your taste buds prefer.
