Manhattan Beach History
In the early days, the region of Manhattan Beach was a part of Rancho Sausal Redondo’s ten-mile oceanfront. A man who owned a part of the town’s north end, named George Peck, first named it ‘Shore Acres’. In the year 1901, another man, named John Merrill, bought the town’s south portion and named it Manhattan, as a tribute to his old city, Manhattan, New York. Merrill and Peck decided to flip a coin to select a name, and the coin flip was in favor of Manhattan. Merrill built the first building downtown, which was later used for city offices in 1901.The large influx of new residents after the 2nd World War was due to the year-round livability of this region. The defense industry’s development brought more people for work and residence. From then, Manhattan Beach has constantly been developing into what it is today.
