Cabrillo Marine Aquarium

If you are looking for something to do in the South Bay, the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is a great place to visit any day! During the summer the aquarium hosts activities and events for the entire family. Check out these activities for the month of July.

Saturday, July 06, 2013 @ 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM

Native Garden Workday / Beach Cleanup

The first Saturday of every month, you can learn more about native plants and animals while doing a good deed by helping to maintain the Cabrillo Native Garden.  Help keep our ocean clean by working together to clear the beach of debris. Bring your friends!

Meet the Grunion

Explore the aquarium then join Cabrillo Marine Aquarium staff in the Auditorium at 9:00 PM for an informative and engaging program on the Grunion. Then go on a guided observation of these amazing fish and watch them glitter as they flop upon the sand to spawn. California fishing license required during open season for anyone over 16 who plans on catching the grunion. Grunion runs happen throughout the summer so check for dates and times.

Fee: $5 Adults, $1 Seniors and Children, Members Free

Salt Marsh Open House

Explore the Salinas de San Pedro wetlands habitat and learn about native plants and animals. This is a great opportunity for bird watching because the salt marsh attracts many species of birds not seen elsewhere in the area.

Walk Cabrillo

Explore all aspects of Cabrillo Beach including the tide pools, salt marsh and sea shore. Get an inside look at what Cabrillo Beach has to offer from CMA’s informative Educational Guides.

Saturday, July 27, 2013 @ 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Family Sandcastle Day

Become a sand sculpture for the day and work with your family to build the coolest sandcastle on the beach! Cabrillo even wets the sand down with you to minimize your trips with buckets to the beach, unless you are filling up a moat. Whether you sketch a drawling beforehand and create a plan of attack or just show up and start building, you are sure to have a blast at this event. It is amazing to see what designs families come up with! Remember to bring hats, sunscreen, drinking water, shovels and buckets.

Summer Camps

Crab Shells and Native Tales (Grades 3-4)

Session 1: July 8, 2013 – July 12, 2013 @ 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Daily

Session 2: August 19, 2013 – August 23, 2013 @ 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Daily

During this weeklong summer camp, your child will learn about marine life and native plants and animals through fun, hands on activities. Registration is required.

Fee: Member Price: $77, Non-Member Price: $85

Galloping Snails and Other Fishy Tales (Grades 1-2)

Session 1: July 15, 2013 – July 19, 2013 @ 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Session 2: August 5, 2013 – August 9, 2013 @ 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

During this week-long summer camp, your child will explore marine life through hands on activities and a fascinating exploration of the seashore. Registration is required.

CMA Kids News Summer Camp (Grades 4- 5)

July 15, 2013 – July 18, 2013 @ 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Your child will become a reporter for the week and will write articles for CMA Kids News! Kids will explore Marine Science through kid created, hands on activities, games and interviews with CMA staff. Then they will write articles about what they learned to be published in CMA Kids News. Responsible Junior and Senior Docents as well as Middle and High School Mentors lead the activities.

Ichthyology (Grades 5-6)

July 22, 2013 – July 26, 2013 @  9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

August 12, 2013 – August 16, 2013 @ 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

During the week, your child will learn basic Marine Biology through hands on activities and dissections. They will explore the seashore and handle ocean animals while learning valuable information about the lives of marine animals.

Marine Sci Hi (Grades 9-12)

July 22, 2013 – July 26, 2013 @ 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM

This weeklong summer will give your child some basic research skills and methods for studying marine biology and oceanography. Students will discover marine life by studying the seashore and practicing research methods. An amazing opportunity for any child interested in Marine Biology.

Wet Tech (Grades 7-9)

August 12, 2013 – August 16, 2013 @ 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Technology and Oceanography combine in this fantastic summer camp. Kids will work together to create underwater remote control vehicles. They will be able to test drive their vehicle as they move it through an underwater obstacle course. Too bad it is only for kids.
