Eco-Friendly Shopping in the South Bay
Tangerine Kangaroo brings the South Bay a wide variety of merchandise made from eco-friendly, sustainable materials. In December 2012 the store was opened by Beate Kirmse, who is passionate about being eco-conscious and taking an active role in sustainability. The name stems from her love of Tangerines which were a rare treat in Germany during the winter months. Her passion drove her and her husband to convert their yard into a small orchard and organic vegetable garden. This inspired her to create a store dedicated to providing customers merchandise that supports sustainable living.
Tangerine Kangaroo has a unique collection of personal care items and clothing. I’ve personally always thought of hemp and bamboo as being coarse materials however, the hemp and bamboo clothing is surprisingly soft and comfortable. Allergies can make buying soap or lotion difficult and can cause itching and sneezing. Most of the time, this is due to the perfumes and chemicals in particular soaps.
People who use soaps made with all natural materials and vegetable glycerin tend to experience less allergic reactions. Tangerine Kangaroo has many types of lotions and soaps available to their customers including some made of hemp seed. You can also pick up an agave loofa to help fluff away dry skin cells and leave your skin feeling smooth. The boutique even carries jewelry!
In addition, there is also a wide selection of products for decorating your home. Bamboo utensils and dishes are not only made from amazing renewable resources, but make for beautiful place settings at your dining room table. To help illuminate your home try the bees’ wax candles. They are made with locally produced bees’ wax from Guerilla Bee Keepers, which was melted into molds made from repurposed old glass bottles. They have a vintage impression to them but are new and chic. If you have plans on attracting your own bees you can sow the seeds.
Plantable cards make great gifts that keep on giving. Instead of throwing it away, it can be planted for a whole new surprise. Or get an organic gardening kit. They make great mini gardens and are even great projects for kids. Tangerine Kangaroo is also one of the few places that carry non-toxic plant based paints for kids. You can be sure that your kids are expressing their creativity with safe, chemical free paints.
“Think Local First”
Although it’s only been open a short time, Tangerine Kangaroo is an eco-friendly shopping that has already shown a commitment to supporting the local economy. Beate Kirmse reminds others to “Think Local First.” In addition to selling handcrafted goods produced by local artisans, the boutique takes part in local events such as the first Thursday Art walk. In June 2013, Beate also hosted a sew-and-go hemp pillowcase event, where customers were invited to sew their own hemp pillow case to take home. She is a proactive advocate for the use of sustainable materials as seen in her store and her lifestyle.
How important are ecologically friendly products to you? What has been the most surprising thing you have found that is made from sustainable materials?
