Polliwog Park In Manhattan Beach
One of the best parks not just in Manhattan Beach, but in all of the South Bay, is Polliwog Park. It’s a huge, bustling, full-service park that might make adults wish their childhood parks were as good. Even so, that doesn’t mean you as a parent won’t enjoy an afternoon spent at Polliwog Park. It’s the type of park that gives you the opportunity to do more than just watch your children, whether you want to get in a swim, play with your dog, or even play a few rounds of Frisbee golf.
A Full Featured Park
The best thing about Polliwog Park is that it has everything. All the facilities that you expect a park to have, Polliwog offers and then some. All the traditional sports are covered with two baseball fields and even a 6 lane pool. The nearby basketball courts were converted to a parking lot, but two full-sized courts are present across the street. Polliwog makes up for this with amenities in everything else: a dog run for letting your pet pals loose, two large playground sites swarming with kids, an outdoor amphitheater built into a hillside, and acres of open grass. It’s also the only park I know of in the area that has built in a disc golf course. These numbered metal baskets dot the fields, allowing Frisbee enthusiasts to make use of the space with one of beach culture’s signature games.
It’s important to note that while the park does it all, it does have rules. For example, barbeques can only set up at their select open barbeque sites and dogs have to stick to certain paths or let loose within the corner dog run. Adhering to these guidelines is a small price to pay to enjoy such an ideal kid’s park, and families looking to play for a few hours should have no problem.
Polliwog Park makes use of the appeal of nature with man-made but interesting installations. One of the the park’s western entrances goes through a small botanical garden. This mini park-within-a-park features a weaving path through native California flora like Matilija poppys and purple sage. The garden attracts native wildlife too, so don’t be surprised to run into Monarch butterflies and western fence lizards. It’s a great educational opportunity for young potential botanists, or even just gardeners looking for ideas on how to add a local, natural touch to their yard
The central lake is Polliwog Park’s most obvious feature. It’s not for swimming or even boating, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be an appealing site, especially for small children. Ducks and turtles populate the nearly 500 feet of water that line the length of one of the playgrounds. Families can often be seen feeding the animals from the lakeside concrete.
A Family Spot
If you’re a family with small children in the area, Polliwog Park is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The potential for fun with kids is obvious, but for parents, it’s a relief to go to a park that’s not only nice, but active. On a typical afternoon, there is no shortage of children playing, allowing for a great social environment for little ones to meet and play. That’s something that you can’t build into just any old park, it’s a reputation and appeal that grows over time.
