Even from the outside you can tell that The Corner Store in San Pedro is not just your typical neighborhood market. Outdoor seating areas and bright blue umbrellas invite guests to linger a bit and enjoy the atmosphere. Posters in the window advertise local events and show customers that The Corner Store is a business that is truly supportive of the San Pedro community. The building itself has an old-fashioned façade which hints at the fact that the store has been open at the current location since 1947. Current owner Peggy Lindquist has done an amazing job of preserving the old-fashioned yet welcoming aesthetic.
The ambiance at the Corner Store is inviting. It’s extremely relaxing to sit next to the front window on a bright sunny day and enjoy an iced coffee or one of the many bottled sodas. The furniture actually was the owner’s living room furniture before it was re-purposed to make customers feel comfortable. An eclectic assortment of goods is sold without the store seeming cluttered. You can buy teaching supplies, market goods, products from local artisans and best of all they have a variety of San Pedro inspired merchandise. They carry DVDs and art created by local artists and centered on this beautiful beach town. It’s the perfect place to bring visiting guests so they can experience the community and pick up a souvenir while they are at it.
The Corner Store is a great place to go for breakfast, brunch, lunch or supper. Freshly baked pastries, steel cut oatmeal and warm bagels are served daily with coffee or tea. Whether you prefer soda or pop, there is a large collection of glass bottled drinks to quench your thirst. They have a selection of beer and wines available and they have held tastings in the past. Gather some friends together and have a tasting party of your own next time you stop in. Make sure to try one of the ginger beers! The café also sells some delicious sandwiches and burgers. The Deli Ciabatta Cheeseburger and The Original Chili Dog are so good they will have you talking with your mouth full so you can rave about how delicious they are.
It’s the Simple Things
The Corner Store gives customers a chance to reminisce and relive a simpler time when neighbors would congregate to discuss politics and art or share local gossip over a hot cup of coffee and freshly baked pastries. They host a myriad of community related events in addition to being extremely supportive of local artisans and businesses. Different local artists are chosen to be artist of the month and their art is featured and sold in the store. Artisans sell handmade wares at the market and The Corner Store takes part in numerous arts and craft fairs. A writing class meets at the store weekly on Wednesday nights and on the second Saturday of every month they hold a farmer’s market. The Corner Store takes an active interest in what is going on in San Pedro and is a real part of the community. It’s a great place to connect with others. It’s just a block from the beach too!
