If you are looking for a quality handcrafted beer without having to drive too far, then The San Pedro Brewing Company here in the South Bay is the place to go. The San Pedro Brewing Company is located in downtown San Pedro and features award winning handcrafted beer developed by brewer Jason Welke. They have participated in several craft beer competitions including Los Angeles International Brew Festival, and they have consistently brought home gold medals. All of their beer is made in-house and most are named for local landmarks.
The owner, James Brown bought the brewery in 1999 and is still very involved in his business. He leads weekly brewery tours and I was fortunate to have the opportunity to join one. I was struck by his passion for creating the best beers possible. He shared with us how he uses his years of experience and feedback from craft beer competitions to refine his craft. He poured two cups of beer from the fermenters for us to sample and I was treated to a taste of what the San Pedro Brewing Company has to offer. Both samples featured full bodied, aromatic and balanced brew. Instead of taking my word for it, drop in for a taste.
The brewpub has a sports bar like atmosphere with well-placed televisions for game nights. There is also a stage set up for live musical performances. In one section of the room sits a huge stainless steel kettle for brewing. Local art hangs on the walls and features well known San Pedro landmarks. There is a patio dining area that sits right next to the downtown sidewalk. The place has a very local vibe to it but the staff and owner make everyone feel welcome.
Food and Drink
Most of the dishes at the San Pedro Brewing Company are named for local landmarks. They offer a great selection of burgers and sandwiches along with pasta and seafood. The grilled Ahi and tri-tip are customer favorites. Of course the star of the show is the beer. The Belgian Wheat Hefe is great for a summer afternoon with its light body and citrus flavors. The SoCal Tatoo Chocolate Porter is like dessert in a glass with its dark cocoa and caramel flavors. If you’re like me and can’t make up your mind, try the Brewers Beer Sampler to get a taste of all the great beers they have to offer. To finish off they have a great dessert selection. The Chocolate Brownie Sunday with a Classic Irish Coffee sounds pretty yummy.
The San Pedro Brewing Company has specials and events all week long. They host Margarita Mondays and Martini Tuesdays. Happy hour is Monday thru Friday from 3:00-6:00. They have free brewery tours on Fridays at 4:30 with beer samples included. For the weekend they have Burger and Beer Saturdays. They have live bands on the weekends and on many nights it’s “game on” for sports enthusiasts looking to score points on the big screen televisions that adorn the walls. They are more than happy to cater as well. Drop in any time for quality handcrafted brew.
